The Gratz College Holocaust and Genocide Studies program focuses on the Holocaust, its contemporary significance, and the broader phenomenon of genocide in modern times. The program is designed for educators in public and private schools, museum staff, community professionals, religious and lay leaders, those involved in interfaith dialogue, and adult learners taking classes for personal enrichment or credit.

Students have access to the Holocaust Oral History Archive at Gratz College's Tuttleman Library, which comprises one of the largest collections of audio-taped testimony in the United States. The Tuttleman Library itself houses a collection of over 2,200 titles of Holocaust and related resources. In addition, there are approximately 1,400 titles on World War II.

In cooperation with the New Jersey Commission on Holocaust Education, this program may be applied to New Jersey teacher professional development hours if aligned with an Individual Professional Development Plan. Teachers are advised to obtain approval from a supervisor prior to registration.

Ph.D. in Holocaust and Genocide Studies 

The Doctor of Holocaust and Genocide Studies at Gratz College is designed for students already holding a graduate degree in Holocaust and Genocide Studies, history, or another related discipline.  Doctoral students will engage in a meta-study of genocide to understand the phenomenon from a comprehensive range of academic approaches—historical, sociological, geographical, psychological, legal, theological and scientific—to inform their dissertations while reviewing significant literature and conducting in-depth original research in the field.

Designed to be completed in 5 years
3 required residencies held in summers including:
              Introduction to doctoral studies orientation (on-campus year 1)
Research course (hybrid on-campus and online - year I)
Non-credit doctoral writing course (hybrid online and on-campus - year l)
Special topics seminar (year II)
Concept Paper Seminar (year III)
All remaining courses online in 8-week intensive sessions
Core courses (7) and electives (3)
Foreign language reading competency for research
Comprehensive Exams in 3 subject areas
Dissertation – related to student’s area of interest
